How does double taxation work between Germany and another country?

Double taxation between Germany and other countries is regulated by Double Taxation Agreements (DTA). These agreements prevent income from being taxed in both countries. Generally: income from self-employment or employment is taxed in the country where the work is performed. Pension income is usually taxed in the country of residence. For real estate income, the location principle applies. It is important to correctly determine your tax residency and declare all income in both countries. What do I need to start a business in Germany?

For business registration in Germany you need: a valid ID card or passport, a registration certificate (registration at the residents' registration office), a description of your planned activity, and for certain activities additional permits. After business registration, you must contact the tax office and complete the tax registration questionnaire. After completing this questionnaire, you will receive your tax number and, if needed, a VAT identification number (USt-IdNr.). How much does a tax consultant cost in Germany?

The costs for a tax consultant in Germany are based on the Tax Consultant Remuneration Regulation (StBVV). The fees are graduated and depend on the value in dispute (e.g., your income or turnover) and the difficulty of the case. For a private income tax return, costs can range between €200 and €1,500. For entrepreneurs, costs vary depending on the scope of services: bookkeeping, annual financial statements, tax returns. How do you prepare the German tax return?

The German tax return is mainly done electronically via the ELSTER portal (Electronic Tax Return). You need various documents: tax certificate(s) from your employer, receipts for work-related expenses, special expenses and extraordinary burdens, proof of insurance contributions, donation receipts, and for real estate the corresponding documents. The return consists of the main form and various annexes depending on the type of income (Annex N for employees, Annex V for rental income, etc.). The process can be complex, especially if you have income from multiple sources or from abroad.
